Care
Heavyweight cotton rewards being washed less and dried slower.
Washing
- Cold water, gentle cycle. Heat is what shrinks cotton.
- Inside out, which keeps the face of the fabric and any print off the drum.
- Wash with like colours for the first few washes — dark cotton gives up dye early on.
- Skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibres and flattens the hand of a heavyweight knit.
Drying
- Line dry in shade. A tumble dryer is the fastest way to shrink a piece and twist its seams.
- Reshape it while damp — pull the shoulders and hem square and let it dry flat or on a wide hanger.
- Dry knitwear flat so it does not stretch under its own weight.
Keeping it
- Fold heavy knits rather than hanging them; hangers pull the shoulders out over time.
- Spot clean small marks instead of washing the whole piece. Fewer washes means a longer life.
